National Health Care Reform

On Sunday, March 21, 2010, the House of Representatives passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act H.R. 3590 which was signed into law by President Obama on Tuesday March 23, 2010.  On March 25, 2010 the House and Senate passed H.R. 4872, the Health Care Education Affordability Act (Reconciliation Act) which made changes to H.R. 3590.  The Act was signed into law on March 30, 2010. 

 

Modeled after groundbreaking 2006 Massachusetts Health Care Reform Legislation, Massachusetts employers already have a head start on addressing many of the issues that employers will be dealing with on a national level.  The following is a summary of key provisions of H.R. 4872, the Reconciliation Act.

Use interactive displays to educate, promote health and explain the advantages of prevention / wellness.  Consider offering health screenings with a focus on enhancing health and wellness rather than disease.  Consider inviting community partners to promote an active lifestyle and healthy eating.  Sample health fair / wellness fair activities include:
  • Nutrition Booths:  information on healthy eating, samples of healthy snacks, healthy cooking demonstration
  • Fitness Booths:  demonstrations of aerobic, stretching and strength activities; information on activities that can be done at home or while at work
